Introduce us to your band!
Hey everyone I am Youssef, the frontman for Random Ties, a heavy hitting rock band based in Detroit.

First let me take you back to 2019 when I moved to the US from Lebanon, I didn’t know anyone or how the music scene was so I started going to open mics with my acoustic guitar & meeting other musicians then one thing led to another & me the rest of the guys.

We have, KD who plays the drums thunderously bringing that heavy hitting power with amazing fills & breaks, Thew who is  on the second guitar, compliments my playing with his fills that are all over our EP & Steven originally from Nirvana’s hometown brought a grunginess to the album with some great basslines.

How did you guys start out?

Our start defines the type of band we are when I think about it. When we first started we didn’t have a reputation in the music scene and no promoter would return our messages so what I would do is follow all the venues around us on social media and in case a booked band cancelled an appearance last minute and the promoter or venue needed a fill in we’d be ready to hope in our car and be available to play the show.

Describe your band’s sound

My first exposure to music was listening to my grandad sing the Opera which sounded so melodic yet powerful & thought I would follow in his footsteps. When I was 8 years old I started listening to the Beatles, Elvis Presley, Michael Jackson, Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaugh and that’s where my love for music grew.  The sound that changed my life was the 90’s bands like Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Foo Fighters and their music shaped who we are as a generation honestly growing up listening to them was so powerful.

What influences your craft?

There is so much going on around us, good and bad, so what better way to channel that energy into music. Our next single Thawra which was released on August 14 on all streaming platforms and our YouTube channel is about the humanitarian crises in Lebanon and every other crisis you can possibly think of so this song is my way to support the people & hopefully shed some light at the end of that tunnel.

This is the artwork for the single & your audience is the first to get a glimpse of it done by the Talented Layal @ipr1ncess.

What makes your project different?

There’s a saying: “Art is never completed, it’s just abandoned.” Our latest EP – Believe – was released recently on Spotify and all other major streaming platforms, this was the EP I put on hold for years. I wrote and did a lot of the stuff myself as opposed to previously, I would work with a group.  Comprising 6 songs, I wanted each one to have a catch and touched on sensitive topics such as losing a loved one, struggles of starting a family, faith and making things work in a relationship. I wanted to have an honest message with lyrics people could relate to & licks they can dance to.

When introducing people to your music, what song should I show them first? What is your quintessential track?

If I had to choose a song today it would be Week 39 we just released a video for it…

I was terrified, those last few weeks of anxiety starting from Week 39 were more than all the previous nine months put together. I wanted this, wanted him to be safe, more than anything else in my life at that time and then suddenly he was born and in our arms!

It’s an industry that is constantly changing so you either adapt or evaporate and now without live shows, which was a big part of our revenue stream, we are trying to be more creative and look at other ways to make up for that such as live streaming and private shows with social distancing guidelines or 1:1 video performances.

What has been the biggest highlight in your career so far?

We were fortunate enough to play in some great venues and opened for national touring bands such as Tantric & Otherwise. It’s a great experience being around such bands you learn so much and meeting the members of Pearl Jam definitely is at the top of my highlight reel.

How bright is the future of your band – what are the plans?

Given that the future of live shows is up in the air, we are turning to social media more to connect with our fans & new listeners, keeping them engaged with good content via our Instagram  https://www.instagram.com/randomtiesofficial/ or Facebook https://www.facebook.com/randomtimesofficial .

Release wise, in addition to – Thawra – our single and video release in August, we plan on releasing an EP by October followed by 2 more videos. Our goal is to remain consistent by providing quality music to our audience & reach a wider fan base geographically so a big thanks to you for giving us this interview and a voice.

When all is said and done, how would you like to be remembered?

An influential rock musician in music history that was a voice for the less fortunate and defiant to corruption & abuse of power.
