Introduce us to your band!
Hey Wavebyte… we are Under The Tongue, an independent alternative rock duo based in Berlin. The band is made up of Mark Eden from Melbourne, Australia and Julia Eden from Berlin, Germany. We formed in 2008 and have released two albums Make A Wish and Potions. We’ve finished our third album Art Of Perception which is being released song by song starting with the first single Waterfall.
How did you guys start out?
Julia: I went to see one of Mark’s solo shows at a festival in Berlin back in 2008 as I’m a fan of everything Australian and so I had to go and see what this Aussie was all about. I really enjoyed the concert and actually felt like dancing, which is normally not the case… after the show I wrote to Mark over Myspace to tell him that I loved his gig. He saw on my profile that I played bass and sang, which happened to be exactly what Mark was looking for at the time. So we met up not long after and spent the whole day and into the night chatting about music and life. Fast forward 12 years and we’re still in the band together and loving it.
Describe your band’s sound
Imagine the music for the series Peaky Blinders, a Dracula film or a Tim Burton movie and mix it with a bit of rock and then you are on the right track. If your unconscious could sing… you just might be listening to Under The Tongue.
What influences your craft?
Movies, life, love, strange situations, philosophers, nature, dreams, other artists and traveling are some of the things that influence our craft.
What makes your project different?
The music that we make has our own particular voices and life influences that we bring to the table when we write and create. Our individual experiences put into sound and visuals is what makes our project different.
When introducing people to your music, what song should I show them first? What is your quintessential track?
Troubled Mind and Everybody’s Scared from the album Potions would sum up the musical vibe of UTT… sorry that’s already two songs!
What has been the biggest struggle in your career so far?
It has been quite a mission to get the music in front of people as there is a vast pool of bands out there.
What has been the biggest highlight in your career so far?
Doing the music video for the song See How They Run. We did everything from directing, editing to making the sets , which was a huge accomplishment in our eyes. Also getting Potions mastered by Bob Ludwig (Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, Nirvana, Queen, Tool etc.) was a definite highlight for us.
How bright is the future of your band – what are the plans?
We’re looking forward to releasing the new album and making heaps of super cool videos for it. Also touring and exploring the world at the same time is part of the plan. So the future for UTT looks really bright.
When all is said and done, how would you like to be remembered?
We would like Under The Tongue to be remembered as a cool rock band whose music and visuals invited you to lose yourself in their peculiar world for a brief moment in time.
