Introduce us to your band!
Hello WaveByte readers! Medusa Touch are an ‘old skool’, heavy-metal band from the glory days of 80s metal. We started this band in 1982 and have decided to get back together and give it another go in 2019.
Our band is a 4 piece and consists of Bruce (Drums & Backing vocals), Gogsy (Main vocals & Guitar), Iain (Bass & Backing vocals) and Nigel (Guitar & Backing vocals)
We have a new album out in August 2019 and have it available on CD (old skool apparently hehehe) and also on all the digital outlets.
We released out latest album in August 2019, if you wish to check it out it is available as a CD (‘old skool’ apparently) and on all the usual digital outlets.
How did you guys start out?
We all played in bands in the 80s in Edinburgh and knew each other from that time. Back in 2013 we all decided to form a covers band and play all the good old tunes that most forget about. However, the opportunity to release an album as Medusa Touch came along and we basically reformed the band fully.
After many different changes in personal, Gogsy is the only remaining member.
Describe your band’s sound
Twin guitars, very 80’s sound, not de-tuned modern metal at all. Harmonies, think Iron Maiden Accept, Wasp, Y&T, you know the thing. We have a very 80s sound that features harmonies and twin guitars, it is not de-tuned modern metal at all. Think Iron Maiden, Accept, Wasp Y&T… you know the thing!
What influences your craft?
Originally, it was Maiden, MSG, Scorpions. Then, as we started to get a bit more adventurous and proficient, we began writing music that was based on news stories of the time which is not the usual subject material for metal.
What makes your project different?
Nowadays, it’s very likely that we are 80’s metal, there’s not a lot of people doing that kind of thing. We can’t do the hair or the spandex tho, so your safe there hehe.
Because of our 80s sound, we are doing things a little differently; there are not a lot of people doing that kind of thing these days. We don’t do the hair or the spandex though, so you’re safe there… hehe!
When introducing people to your music, what song should I show them first? What is your quintessential track?
Tough question… I would go for Craze Amazin’ as that’s the one that people seem to be listening to on Spotify.
What has been the biggest struggle in your career so far?
I think it would have to be when the band started in the 80s. It was so difficult to get heard and get a record deal. The market was very saturated, there was just so much music around. As a listener, it was great but very tough when you were in a band. I can’t really remember any bands getting signed from Edinburgh back then.
What has been the biggest highlight in your career so far?
For me personally (Gogsy), I played in another band and had the chance to play the legendary CBGB’s in New York twice and there was a live album released of that gig.
How bright is the future of your band – what are the plans?
It’s looking very good indeed. We are going to embark on a small Scottish Tour in November 2019, followed by some festivals in 2020 and we hope to release another album with the rest of the songs from the 80s.
When all is said and done, how would you like to be remembered?
Medusa Touch – they were magic!
