Introduce us to your band!
Underwing is the intense interaction between groovy rhythms, melancholic moods and hard-hitting hooks! Accompanying the music are lyrics that deal with a number of subjects such as mental health in today’s materialistic society, life, death, all draped in an overarching theme of existentialism.
Firmly rooted in a metaphorical landscape, Underwing gives its audience a chance to reflect on humanity’s, as well as their own path in life.
How did you guys start out?
We formed at the beginning of 2016 on the southern coast of Norway. Our vision was clear from the outset: creating a unique, honest musical expression. Coming from previous bands, we all knew what worked and what didn’t, accelerating the process of forming the infrastructure and live performances. After our first EP ”Kaela Upsweep” things just naturally progressed towards where we are today.
Describe your band’s sound
In short: If Black Sabbath and Alice in Chains had a lovechild that was adopted by Tool, who coincidentally lived next door to Soundgarden and Motorpsycho, the result would be Underwing. We are definitely inspired by the last five decades of musical endeavours, so our soundscape can easily be described as a merge between the groovy rhythms found in 70’s rock, the melancholic atmosphere of 90’s grunge and the sonic complexity of modern progressive metal.
What influences your craft?
Musically, when writing songs, whatever comes to mind is often a fragment of something I’ve heard and liked. Often inspired by the bands mentioned above. At the same time, influences may come from anything, not only music. I tend to inspire myself as well, playing along with my imagination to create interesting lyrics that reflect a state of mind or something I’m going through at the time. To shine a light on what’s hidden in all of us must be a priority.
What makes your project different?
I don’t know what it differs from, but when I view Underwing objectively, I see five guys working their butts off to deliver an interesting experience filled with melancholy and hope, an active presence both off and online, energetic live shows and an unquenchable thirst for progression. We take good care of our fans and try to engage with them in any way possible to maintain their feeling of involvement.
When introducing people to your music, what song should I show them first? What is your quintessential track?
I’d say Where Gods Conspire or Caveman. But it really depends on the person you’re introducing. We have songs ranging from radio-friendly hook-driven songs (I Am The Sun, The Hoof) to the more complex metal songs (We Lie Awake, Paragon, Where Gods Conspire). Maybe a mix of both? (Kaela, All Rise, Caveman, Spirals, Pay in Silver)
What has been the biggest struggle in your career so far?
Time management, I guess. We’re a band, but foremost a business with five individual roles to fill. When new ideas and tasks emerged in the beginning, we’d often bite off more than we could chew. We somehow managed to get control (somewhat) over the situation and I’d say we’re well on our way to becoming a structured business/band.
What has been the biggest highlight in your career so far?
I love to see hard work pay off. We’ve been confident in delivering a product we believe in, taking us places we have never been before, meeting new people and finding new ways to promote ourselves. Shaping not only our musical expression, but our own chemistry as well. That is the biggest highlight.
How bright is the future of your band – what are the plans?
We recently released our second EP – ‘Spirals’. So, the nearest future has and will consist of promoting it. We’re also working on some interesting bookings, songs, covers and writing our first full-length album. Lots and lots of writing, updates and the all familiar office-grind! In the long term… we’re coming for you, world!
When all is said and done, how would you like to be remembered?
I want Underwing to be remembered as the five outcasts claiming their right to rock’n’roll when nothing was given for free. A hardworking band with a mission; to escape the clutches of the norm while creating their unique path both professionally and personally. In mind as in music. Hopefully converting people into Underwings along the way!
Thanks for taking the time to talk to us!
