Infectious, intense, gritty and determined to make a statement – Hard To Be Around may be SUN ARCANA’s strongest offering to date.
In case you didn’t know, SUN ARCANA are one of the UK’s ever-growing alternative scene’s prized jewels. Hailing from Essex and London, the 4-piece have made a name for themselves by producing melodic, yet crunching, tunes that are delivered with passion and bite in their live performances. The band have been somewhat quiet since the release of their last effort, Let Me Down (Ventilate), but with the announcement of latest single Hard To Be Around, it is fair to say that it has been well worth the wait.
This track has a slightly more intense sound to some of their other offerings to date. Opening with pulsing drums and the easily recognisable musings of Tom Harper Ward skipping atop of a thumping bassline, from the very first note you prepare for the unavoidable detonation that feels to be imminent at every turn. When the chorus does arrive, it is simple yet effective in worming its way into your conscious and leaves you singing the cyclical lyrics along with the band.
I know, I know, I know you’re sick of waiting.
What’s more, the breakdown is nothing short of flawless. The instruments each have their own moment in the spotlight to contort before all parts become one and direct the song towards its triumphant conclusion. The ‘I’m a mess, I’m a mess, I’m a mess’ lyrics run recurrently in the track’s dying moments, and they really do a great job of intensifying proceedings.
It is clear and has been for some time, that SUN ARCANA are destined for big things, it is just imperative that they continue to produce great music – and Hard To Be Around is just that. Infectious, intense, gritty and determined to make a statement, this may be the band’s strongest offering yet and it feels as though they are just one spin on BBC Radio 1 away from being superstars.
