Introduce us to your band! How did you guys start out?
These Fast Times are a four-piece punk-rock band formed from the ashes of multiple bad decisions, misspent youth and a unifi…ed-need to cause a major ruckus at any given time. Armed with the fuzziest of distorted guitars, relentless pounding drums, p-h-a-t bass-lines and a whole lot of screaming with a little bit of vocal-melody included – These Fast Times are continually finding ways to overwhelm, offend & entertain their audience through all of their five senses.
The rotting-core of the band’s line-up currently includes Jeffrey Vuorela (Vocals, Guitar), Jason Bellefontaine (Bass, Vocals), Thomas Kolofsky (Lead Guitar) and Ryan Kennedy (Drums). Each member got started in the usual way…they got into music early-on in life etc. etc., started bands, ended bands and experienced all the hardships necessary to put a massive punk-chip on their shoulders. Officially combining their talents & stank of desperation together in 2015, These Fast Times have gone on to fill up the space in front of them with fans of true-punk and drain many a beer-can since.
Discovering quickly that they could stand each other’s personalities, energy and smell – These Fast Times shut themselves away in the studio and began to write, create & refine. Even the band-members were now able to vouch for their music as ‘not half-bad’ finally…and though perhaps reluctantly, pride in their dirty punk-rock sound began to take hold of these four from Montreal…
The results of the writing and recording session became the six new songs released by These Fast Times on their self-titled record released in February 2016. Playing shows to support the album all throughout the year – you can expect These Fast Times ready to show up right to your own bloody front door if it means they can play another show before they all croak. Main reason being…somewhere along the lines, all four members of the band realized that the music they were making…as grimy and dirty as it might be…was music that NEEDED to be played…music that the people WANTED to hear.
Make no mistake – These Fast Times don’t put themselves through all the shit that comes along with being in a punk-rock band for their own enjoyment; no – it’s a far more selfless act. They do it for YOU. Come get some!
Describe your band’s sound
Our band is a mix of pop-punk/punk/rock. We all grew up listening to bands like Blink 182, New Found Glory, Nofx, No Use For a Name, and Lagwagon. We also draw individually from other bands. For instance, Jason’s love for pop-punk bands like Amber Pacific, and All Time Low, Ryan’s love for punk bands like Bouncing Souls, and Strung Out. Jeff’s love for pop-punk/ punk bands like Against Me!, and Real Friends. Thomas loves rock bands like Red Hot Chili Peppers and Foo Fighters. The mix of all these bands help to give These Fast Times its sound.
What influences your craft?
Mostly love, heartbreaks, wanting out of relationships and sometimes problems with the music scene/bands.
What makes your project different?
We try to take new approaches to get people involved whether it’s getting people to sing at our shows or letting them watch our live streams on twitch (we’ve fallen a bit behind but we’re going to get back up soon). We try to be open and transparent with all our fans and we try to give them a show they won’t soon forget.
When introducing people to your music, what song should I show them first? What is your quintessential track?
It’s hard to just choose one because of how our styles vary from song to song. But I’d probably suggest either “My Thanks”, “Take Me Home”, “It’s Not Just Me” and/or “Simon”.
What has been the biggest struggle in your career so far?
The biggest struggle of our career would have to be getting our music into people’s ears. With so many great bands out there it’s very easy to get lost in a sea of bands. We do all we can to stand out, but it’s still a struggle.
What has been the biggest highlight in your career so far?
The biggest highlight of our career is that we’ve played with so many great bands and some bands that we grew up listening too. It’s crazy to think that we’ve opened for Ten Foot Pole, and that we were on the same bill as Goldfinger, and one of our next shows is with Michael Graves from the Misfits. These are all band that we grew up listing too and idolized.
How bright is the future of your band – what are the plans?
Brighter than the sun! We’re hoping to go back into the studio do record a new LP, we also want to plan out a European tour, do a complete cross Canada tour and one day take over the world!
When all is said and done, how would you like to be remembered?
As a band that made some money off their art lol. Really, we just want people to love the music and remember us for the passion, the love, the energy, and the blood and sweat that we put into every song.
