Introduce us to your band!
We are Moonshade, a metal band from the city of Porto, in northern Portugal. We just released our debut album, Sun Dethroned, via Art Gates Records
How did you guys start out?
Pedro, our guitarist, met our ex-drummer Cristiano when they formed Deep Cut, their first musical project together. Afterwards, when Deep Cut was over, they agreed to form a different project, way back in 2010. Ricardo was the first and only official lead singer for Moonshade. Afterwards, a lot of people came and went, with Ricardo and Pedro being the only constant members.
Nuno and Daniel – the other two current members – have been with us for close to 5 years now, and we met both of them through public auditions.
Describe your band’s sound
Moonshade are the Lusitanian response to the more melodic side of death-metal, with a charismatic and deeply personal sound signature that mixes a myriad of other musical influences that go beyond the genre. Until now, we have been focused on epic songs with a healthy dose of heavy riffs and guttural vocals.
What influences your craft?
We draw a whole lot of inspiration from bands like Dark Tranquillity, Insomnium, Amorphis, Paradise Lost, or Swallow the Sun, to name a few. We also listen to a great deal of artists that don’t play metal or rock.
What makes your project different?
We usually have this recurrent meme where we say that with Moonshade you can actually tell two of our songs apart. To us, each song is a monolith, and it stands alone. There are no fillers, no rehashes of old songs, or anything like that. We take great care in giving each song an identity.
When introducing people to your music, what song should I show them first? What is your quintessential track?
Hard question! We would say that “Sun Dethroned” would be our quintessential track, that being the reason why we chose it for our debut music video, directed by Guilherme Henriques (Belphegor, Noctem, Wormed).
What has been the biggest struggle in your career so far?
It’s hard to grow in the music business when you’re no good at sucking up to promoters and record labels. However, we do this out of love, so lack of fame doesn’t keep us up at night.
What has been the biggest highlight in your career so far?
That would probably be playing in the same stage as Amorphis and Within Temptation, at Vagos Open Air 2015, an iconic Portuguese metal festival.
How bright is the future of your band – what are the plans?
For now, we have two shows planned in Portugal, including one where we will share the stage with Omnium Gatherum. After that, we have an Iberian tour planned, co-headlined by another amazing Portuguese project called Apotheus. In 2020 we will play some more gigs, some possibly outside Portugal, while we write our follow-up album.
- When all is said and done, how would you like to be remembered?
We want to be the band that gave you chills up your spine while you listened with your eyes closed, and the band that gave you a great sense of revelation when you opened your eyes to read our lyrics.
