Charlie Soul sings about love, dedication, and hope in this poignant yet laid-back debut single.
The release of Obsessed marks the first ever single drop by 14-year-old singer-songwriter Charlie Soul, who’s been performing for just over a year now. In this brand-new track, Soul sings about a love touched by hope and dedication and laments about everything that they have to lose.
Soul’s voice is clear, calm and effortless as she sings over a steady beat that carries through the song. At the same time, the sound of fingers clicking in the background leaves me unable to stop myself from swaying or tapping my foot to the rhythm. The choruses are both musically and lyrically more solemn than the verses, with lines such as “without your love, oh, I’m a mess” shrouding them with relative poignancy. In the verses however more hope is to be found, as well as my favourite example of Soul’s writing, in the form of “even when the sky’s grey we can paint it blue” which I believe is a testament to the strength of the relationship between the two people Soul sings about.
Charlie Soul has created a laid back pop tune with a catchy melody and a beat that keeps you swaying, and for a first single, I’d say that she has more than smashed it. It becomes clear when you first hear her voice that this is an artist with a whole load of potential and I can’t wait to see her branch out, and luckily I don’t have to wait too long. Soul has announced that she will be releasing another single towards the end of April to the beginning of May and I cannot wait to see what else she is able to create.
