David Gray fans don’t have to wait much longer until the release of his highly anticipated new album Gold in a Brass Age, and in the meantime can enjoy this alternative yet surprisingly intimate new single that is sure to take everyone by surprise.
A Tight Ship is the latest single to be released by singer-songwriter David Gray, taken from his upcoming album Gold in a Brass Age set for release on March 8th. This album will be his first material released in four years, as well as his 11th studio album overall, spanning an impressive 25-year musical career filled with Grammy and BRIT nominations.
A Tight Ship consists of three verses with no chorus, and a definite focus on the line “dance like no one sees” which is repeated several times throughout. Gray’s long-time fans will find themselves in familiar territory with the elements of guitar and piano playing that shine through in the song’s instrumentals, however in a mix up from his usual fashion Gray also introduces a touch of electronica to equation and his exploration of alternative sounds add a faint techno feel.
Then, over the music comes Gray’s recognisably raspy vocals which blend perfectly with the upbeat yet steady and relaxed tempo, as phrases like “mirrored pools” and “sleep to dive” are harmonically repeated. While repetition is used a lot in this song it does not become boring as Gray’s writing is more like poetry than lyrics and his voice keeps this melodic tone throughout.
It’s the final verse that really captures my imagination though. Gray brings back the heart of the song and sings “tonight we dance like no one sees us” in an almost falsetto tone as the song draws itself to a close. This line is repeated three times in the final moments and steals the show, his voice sounding strained, distant and beautiful, with his notes echoing from the background, until the final repetition when his voice is all that remains over the silence.
The release of Gold in a Brass Age on March 8th comes just ahead of a span of seventeen headline shows across the UK and Ireland, so make sure you grab your tickets before they all sell out!
