1. Introduce us to your project.
I am Charly, a French musician, singer, songwriter and film composer based in LA. I have different projects and a band. I just released an EP, Film Scores, regrouping songs I created in the past few years for short movies. This project is kind of my resume as a film composer. I am proud of it.
2. How did you start out?
I discovered my interest of composing music for film at the Academy of Art University of San Francisco where I did a Music Production Program. When I moved to Los Angeles, I got the chance to do an internship with a film composer, Peace S. Nistades who helped me a lot developing my own stuff.
3. Describe the sound of your project.
This project focuses on tracks created for specific short movies. I had to follow what filmmakers wanted me to do so there is not a specific genre. But, I hope you can still hear my style in each song. There are elements, like acoustic guitars and backing vocals that I try to get in every song to stick to my original style as a rock-folk songwriter.
4. What influences your craft?
For this project, I am focusing on what filmmakers need and on how to serve what the story describes in the script that I have to work on. For my solo artist projects, I gained influences from life experiences and musicians that I love and listen to.
5. What makes your project different? Why should people listen to you?
This EP is composed of film scores. I guess it is kind of different of most of the EPs you can find today. Also, since I am first a singer, guitar player and songwriter, I come from the rock and folk side of music. I guess it brings different music flavours you don’t usually hear in the movie field.
6. When introducing people to your music, what song should I show them first? What is your quintessential track?
If they are looking for a standard song format, I would say Another Day, Another Lie. If they are looking for a more movie soundtrack style, The Boy In The Mirror. I really loved composing Another Day, Another Lie, ’cause I didn’t know I was able to create in this style of music and that was pretty fun to do.
7. What has been the biggest struggle in your career so far?
Being confident and giving self-esteem, even when things are not evolving fast enough.
8. What has been the biggest highlight of your career so far?
Releasing EPs. Prior this one, I released two with my two different bands “Charly&Faust” and “The Sutra” in 2017. My solo artist EP will also be out in a month or two. I am so excited to release an EP by myself with songs I created by myself, for me about subjects I want to share. It is going to be the first time.
9. How bright is the future of your project – what are the plans?
Only the future will tell us. I am just trying to enjoy the chance to work in my passion field without worrying about what the future will bring. I believe that when you work hard it always will pay at the end.
10. When all is said and done, how would you like to be remembered?
I don’t know if I would be being remembered or not. But I would love my music to stick around in one way or another for sure!
Thanks for taking the time to talk to us!
